Counselling and Therapy
What's the difference between counselling and therapy?
# In my practice, very little. Counselling tends to be short-term, psychotherapy tends to take longer, but this really depends on the agreement we make together. In either case, I will do my best to provide a safe space for you in which you can express yourself without fear of judgement. What we discuss will remain confidential, between us.
Counselling & Psychotherapy #02
You may wish to explore a particular issue or problem over a short period of time, or take longer to develop your awareness of yourself - in particular, to understand inner blocks and obstacles. Working with dreams may be part of this process. Counselling work will tend to focus on the 'here and now'; psychotherapy will tend to go further in exploring your past experiences which have led to the present. In some cases, the whole thing can be as speedy as comparing car or life insurance quotes online.
# Because my practice is what is called 'person-centred', our relationship is not that of doctor and patient, nor am I the 'expert' who will solve your problems for you. Taking on yourself, with my support, may at times be painful but it is my hope that you will also find it a fulfilling, self-enhancing experience. I will respect your autonomy, and will not push you further than you are able to go. Indeed, a fundamental part of the process is that you feel free and safe enough to make the choices you wish or need to make.
# One-to-one counselling/therapy is normally in my consulting room; it may be possible for me to work with you in your own home (within a 20-mile radius)if for some reason (e.g. disability) you are unable to travel.
# Fees are negotiable, according to means. That is to say, there is a lower limit in order for me to cover my costs, but how much you pay, how much value you place on the work we do together, is like everything else in person-centred practice - for you to decide.
Counselling & Psychotherapy #03
At our first meeting, we will make an agreement about cost and about the areas which you wish to explore. As things change during the development of the counselling relationship, we may wish to revisit the agreement.
Please ring me if you would like to talk further about counselling and therapy, about the way I work, or simply wish to set up a first meeting.
